What software can I use to make about 5 minute clips from a movie?

I am a teacher and would like to incorporate sections of a movie into one of my lessons. Rather than jumping back and forth between equipment or searching a DVD in the middle of class to get to the right spot, I want to prepare the clips in advance and insert them into a PowerPoint presentation. What free software is out there that will allow me to cut segments of about 5 minutes from a documentary on DVD?

What software can provide me with hundreds or thousand of sound effects that can be put into a movie?
